The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
