Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
