Government Official Confirms MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Instructed to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing secret matters in all vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

In a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any car, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This wider security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
