The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
